A History of Lane Reclinersby: Michael O'Brien POSTED: September 26, 2008 2:40 pm America/Chicago Producing a full line of recliner chairs, the Lane Furniture Company has earned a well deserved reputation for styling, quality and most of all comfort. The Lane Furniture Company has been a leader in the recliner chair and motion furniture market since buying up a small recliner chair manufacturer in 1972. In addition to recliner chairs, the Lane Furniture Company is known worldwide for their famous Lane cedar chests.
The history of the Lane Furniture Company goes back to the early Twentieth Century. Using the native hardwoods that grew in abundance in Virginia, John Edward Lane began making cedar chests. In AltaVista, Virginia, John Edward Lane founded the Standard Red Cedar Chest Company. AltaVista was a company town in every sense, having been founded by the Lane family in the early Nineteen Hundreds. The Lane family construction business took part in building the local railroad, reportedly buying up a substantial amount of land at the junction of two railroad lines.
Lane Cedar Chests
Early versions of Lane’s cedar chests gradually improved and Lane went on to produce thousands of cedar chests. As the quality of the chests improved, so did the company’s reputation. John Lane renamed the Standard Red Cedar Chest Company to the Lane Company in the early Nineteen Twenties. The Lane cedar chest became so popular that it is today it is considered by many folks to be the gold standard of cedar chests. This well earned reputation for quality came partly as a result of a master stroke of self promotion that is still cited today as an example of successful product marketing.
With a new name, the company set out to aggressively promote its line of cedar chests. John Lane came up with what proved to be a very successful approach to self promotion. Lane understood the market for his product and started to give away small replicas of his cedar chests. It is thought that through the early Eighteen Hundreds, the Lane Company gave away millions of these tiny cedar chests. The give away was targeted toward young women who would be graduating from high school.
Often referred to as a hope chest, it was the place where young women would collect and store items of household linens. The hope aspect reflected the hope that marriage would soon be in the offing. Unique for its time, the Lane Cedar Chest became synonymous with hopes dreams of millions of young women and helped to reinforce the Lane brand name. Even today, a hope chest is remains a popular gift the bride and groom to be.
The War Years and Beyond
With the outbreak of wars in Europe and the Pacific, the Lane Company, like many manufacturers of the day, retooled its production operations. Helping to meet the demands of the war effort, the Lane Company began making plywood composites and airplane frame components. The post-war years ushered in a rapid diversification of the company’s products and production capabilities. In addition to producing its now famous Lane cedar chests, the company started to produce and market a wide variety of wood furniture that is still produced today. Among one of the company’s best known innovations, the Lane Company started an employee profit sharing program. Ahead of the pack, Lane’s program was one of the first such programs in the country.
Lane Recliners
In addition to its famous line of cedar hope chests, the Lane Company is probably best known for its line of high quality recliners and other motion furniture. By 1972, other furniture companies had long since established themselves in the recliner chair and motion furniture market. After purchasing a small recliner chair manufacturer in Tupelo, Mississippi, Lane was considered a Johnny come lately to the recliner market and faced some significant competitive challenges. Over time, the Lane Company not only pulled even with its competition but became one the best known recliner brands in the business.
Keeping up with a constantly changing market and demands by consumers, it is a challenge for any company to compete. The Lane Company has responded with recliners and motion furniture that meets the needs of theirs customers. Innovation and strategic marketing has helped Lane maintain its position as one of the biggest names in recliner chairs.
Plus size recliners, often referred to as big man recliners have become very popular and in typical Lane fashion, the company introduced its Comfort King line of heavy duty recliners. Designer with steel seat boxes and drop-in coil seats, these recliners are well built and far from being just oversize recliners. Built with quality throughout and with user comfort in mind, the seat area of the heavy-duty Lane recliner measures almost four square feet. This is one of the largest seating areas of any recliner chair on the market today. With the right combination of foam rubber and double stitching at critical points, the lane heavy duty recliners are at the top of the class in big man recliners.
Think Recliners Think Lane
When you think recliners, recliner chairs and motion furniture like recliner sofas, think Lane first. Known for quality, style and comfort, Lane recliners and motion furniture are available in a wide variety of decorator colors and styles, from the popular mission and high leg styles to the bulldog Comfort King.
